Before every trip back to Japan, I make one essential stop: the 7D Dried Mango factory outlet.

7D dried mangoes are the quintessential Cebu souvenir — you’ll find them in every supermarket and airport shop. But if I have time, I go straight to the source: the factory outlet attached to the production facility.

It’s tucked in a narrow alley near J-Mall, one of Cebu City’s larger shopping centers. The building is painted green with a giant mango on the wall — unmistakable. A large ”♥ 7D” sign greets you at the entrance. (The “I ❤️ [Town Name]” monument, by the way, appears in virtually every town in the Philippines. It’s basically a national institution.)

Inside, the space is small. Sample products are displayed at a counter in the back, with prices listed. You fill out an order slip, hand it to a staff member, and pay. Simple.

Two reasons I make the trip:

First: The prices are lower than supermarkets, and there are products here you won’t find elsewhere.

My personal favorites: Mango Bites — dried mango chunks coated in chocolate. They consistently impress people in Japan. For myself, I always buy Mango Purée — it’s excellent mixed into sparkling water, added to beer in small amounts, or set with gelatin into a simple jelly dessert.

Second: During mango season, they sometimes sell fresh mangoes here at extraordinary prices.

On this visit (June), large, firm, not-quite-ripe mangoes were going for 90 pesos per kilo — when battered supermarket mangoes sell for 100 pesos and up. The catch: minimum purchase is 3 kilos. I ended up with nine mangoes.

The staff member handed them over with a smile: “Morning, noon, and night — all mango for you!” 😄

I asked when the fresh mango sales would end. Even the staff weren’t sure — no fixed schedule, apparently. Just a seasonal thing when availability allows.

Back home, I brewed coffee and treated myself: warmed-up Argao torta (from the Argao torta trip) with vanilla ice cream and a slice of the fresh mango. The warm torta, half-melted ice cream, and bright mango sweetness came together perfectly. A spontaneous dessert that was better than anything I could have planned.

I should have bought more mangoes.
